Would your child be excited to see a story they’ve created made into a hardcover book?  Then read on, about the BGP Young Author program!

Young Authors is a voluntary writing activity for TK – 2nd grade students.  Students can choose to write their own work of fiction or poetry.  This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to express herself/himself in a creative, extra-curricular, writing project.

The program kicks-off the week of Dec. 2nd 2019, with a Request For Information (RFI) sheet coming home with your child.  This may be returned through the end of January 2020.  When the RFI is returned, an information packet will be sent home.

Students may turn in their story/poetry to their teacher, or directly to Mrs. Jackson in the library, anytime through Feb. 27th, 2020.

We will have a party to celebrate all of our authors.  Please join us at the Birch Grove Primary Publishing Event:

Viola Blythe Holiday Canned Food Drive has begun!

Birch Grove Primary and Intermediate schools will be collecting canned food again this year to support Viola Blythe. The Viola Blythe Community Service Center of Newark is a nonprofit, nonsectarian corporation organized to promote, support and advocate social and human services to any person who is in immediate need. This mission is accomplished by a variety of programs, including emergency food and clothing distribution, referrals to other agencies, special programs that address current community needs and holiday programs at Thanksgiving and December holidays.

From now until December 13, 2019, Birch Grove schools will be collecting canned food (please be sure your canned food donations are not outdated) along with new, unwrapped toys for the holidays. Please send your donation to your child’s classroom or drop it off in the bin in front of the school. Our support helps this essential organization provide for our needy neighbors here in Newark all year around.

Thank you in advance for your support.

As we come back to school for the new school year, please take the time to remind students about safety and how to prevent stranger danger, especially if students walk to and from school.

When you can, please take some family time to go over the prevention tips listed below, and teach your children to become aware of dangerous people and the lures they use to entice them.   Remind students to please be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious behavior to their family so you or the school can notify the police.

  1. Don’t walk to/from school alone. Always stick with a group.
  2. Don’t take shortcuts.
  3. If someone approaches you, yell and run.
  4. Don’t talk to strangers.
  5. Don’t accept rides from anyone without parent permission (establishing a family code works will work for emergency situations).
  6. If something unusual happens to you or one of your friends, tell an adult immediately.
  7. Identify a place that you can run to for safety if needed (i.e. a neighbor’s house or a public place).
  8. Never stay to write down the license number of the vehicle. Report what you remember to an adult.

Be straightforward, yet caring. Emphasize that dangerous people may only pretend to be nice. They try to trick children so they can possibly do bad things to them. Dangerous people can be big or small, old or young. They can be men or women, boys or girls. Our school will continue to support our students with safety drills and we appreciate your support with this important work.
